Dr Leonie Thom

BVSc

Hello fellow animal fanatics. My name is Leonie Thom, and I grew up on a farm in country Victoria before graduating from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2002.

I worked in mixed and small animal practices in Victoria and Tasmania before moving to warmer Queensland in 2008. I then joined Zillmere Vet Surgery (now Virginia Family Vet) in 2020.

I love the challenge of many areas of small animal medicine, dentistry, and surgery but have a particular passion for veterinary behavioural medicine. After a few years of study, I attained membership status of the Veterinary Behaviour chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) by examination in 2022. Being able to provide pet owners with practical and effective strategies to help pets with emotional disorders and other behavioural concerns is incredibly fulfilling.

I also became Fear-free accredited in 2022. I enjoy investigating unusual cases and so when I was lucky enough to see a rare and previously unreported musculoskeletal condition in a cat, I took on the challenge of publishing it in an international journal in 2017. I presented the same case at the ANZCVS Science Week conference in 2016 where I was fortunate enough to gain an award.

When not solving pet health concerns, I spend my time mountain biking (mostly staying on the bike, but not always), walking my dog Meg in local bushland, reading, sewing, and camping with Meg and my husband Terry. I also practice and teach the art of Seido Karate.

My cat, Molly, just sits on the deck and watches everything happen around her.
